T. Edward Nickens

I’m a freelance journalist with dream titles that keep me in bylines. As editor-at-large for Field & Stream magazine, I write long-form narrative features and plenty of short stuff in between. I have a column, Total Outdoorsman, that takes an essayist’s spin on hunting and fishing culture.

I’m also a contributing editor for Audubon magazine, where my reporting on environmental issues has required scaling rain forest tree canopies in Honduras, paddling remote Ontario rivers, and ferreting through lumber mills and federal regulations in both the United States and Canada.

A Southerner, born and bred, I’m happy to contribute frequently to Garden & Gun, winner of the 2015 National Magazine Award for General Excellence. I’m also a judge for Garden & Gun‘s Annual Made In The South Awards, curating the outdoors division.

I’m fortunate to be able to take some big bites on important, intriguing stories for these titles and others, among them Smithsonian, National Geographic Adventure, Men’s Journal, National Wildlife, Backpacker and many others. My first national gig was as an editor for Preservation, the magazine of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It’s been quite a ride.

My work has been a major part of National Magazine and FOLIO awards, including the FOLIO Gold award for my story, Following Our Father. I write a great deal about hunting and fishing and conservation, but often those subjects are a medium through which I explore history and culture. Many of my “hunting and fishing stories” are great stories that just happened to be told through the lens of sporting culture. At least, I hope that’s how they read. Plenty of examples HERE.

I have a stake in the digital world, as well. Plenty more about that HERE, but the short of it: I have served as host, co-producer, and lead writer on a number of television and web-based series, including 7 years as host and co-producer of Heroes of Conservation and nearly a decade as host and co-producer of the Total Outdoorsman’s Challenge. I have served as scriptwriter and on-camera host and lead writer-researcher for programs that explore topics as diverse as survival skills and American manufacturing.
